I have one 50mm 1.8/f and yes you can see the milky way. But not as you can see on the telescope lol.

I went to an observatory last weekend and these are about as good as I could get with 25s shutter speed. Lens was only F4 though, I'm looking at an F1.4 atm, not sure how much of an impact it'll make in reality.
You can just about see the milky way in a few of them. For a first attempt I can't complain though:
